Also, from a woman’s viewpoint — being an erotica author who once worked with Playgirl magazine, it seems that a good number of straight men (not all, of course) are threatened and out and out enraged by the portrayal of male nudity in films and magazines. Playgirl models were sometimes physically confronted at adult conventions, with promo materials knocked out of their hands. When the movie Magic Mike was released, a group of angry men stormed the film’s IMDB message boards and raged about the sexual exploitation of men in movies — like we ladies can’t have one sexy movie, just for us! And women also can be affected by the stereotype — as an erotic author, I’ve had publishers (none of my current ones) send me proposed covers featuring scantily clad women — I would ask them, would you put a photo of a man in a thong on the cover of Playboy, and expect men to buy it? The fear of the peen still runs strong…
